Enhancing the Raqlan Wharf project through high performance Solar Bollard Lighting

The local community of Raglan Harbour (Whāingaroa) and visitors to the popular destination, are being treated to a rejuvenated Raglan Wharf as part of project work completed in 2024.

For its part, Solar Lighting NZ has been proud to supply a lighting solution that enhances the Raglan Wharf area through Solar Bollard Lighting (SBL).

All-night-running SBL and overhead area lights are an easy way to add light to wharfs, pathways and outdoor spaces. With around 100 hours of full-power LED lighting available on a single charge they add security, safety and usability to any public space or walkway .

High-use wharf environments present challenges such as exposure to unpredictable weather and storm surges, and not having access to mains power.

Solar bollards like the all new SBL2 Series models require no trenching, cabling or wiring and offer unique properties that operate successfully to survive rough seas and high salt environments.

For the Raglan Wharf jetty the SBL2 Series that are installed run at 0.5watt per luminaire with 3000K (warm white) LED’s. They will run full power dusk until dawn 365 days of the year and will last for up to 15 years before only the luminaire needs to be replaced.

Designed to last, our solar domes are made in Australia with UV stabilised polycarbonate and stainless steel external reflectors. The poles and optional flange mountings are manufactured in New Zealand from 6106 T6 marine grade aluminium.

Quality commercial solar lights have no requirement for sensors or dimming for battery conservation. Their power systems are custom designed to suit the installation location during the winter solstice, when nights are the longest and the least amount of daylight is available.

This ensures a compliant illumination outcome year-round that is fit for purpose, with a long life cycle. Even for Invercargill's longer nights our 80mA unit will never fail to perform, running 191 hours from a full charge and without further sunlight.

The SBL series is the only IP68 solar bollard light with a submersible rating. With IP68 ingress protection and an 1K10 impact rating, our SBL are, in summary, highly weather-proof, vandal resistant and are backed with a ten-year warranty.  They provide asymmetrical light distribution for paths and the choice of symmetrical light distribution for open  spaces.

There is now a choice of models to suit the recharge conditions in any location, even where it is under shade, partly shaded or in snow, and still have lighting continuously available on full power every night regardless of the weather or flood conditions.

In addition our Orca overhead range provide reliable and constant light on each end of the pontoon - seen above at far right. The stand-alone lighting system is architecturally designed to enhance public spaces. An extruded aluminum alloy pole is used and is impervious to rust or corrosion from salt water and extremely strong.

Features of the Solar bollard light:

  • Low cost energy bills.

  • Low cost and quick installation, no trenching, cabling or wiring required.
