LandLAB one to watch

The landscape architecture blog Landizer has named Auckland-based LandLAB as one of ten international emerging practices to watch.

Blogger Daniel Nell, who describes himself as a ‘passionate’ landscape architect from Cape Town, South Africa, compiled the list as World Landscape Architecture Month drew to a close last week.

He says the practices named '“exemplify innovative and experimental aspects of the landscape architectural profession. These firms often work across disciplines and scales, and manage to push the envelope despite their small size, geographical constraints or youth.”

The blog states the ten studios “are already making an impact on the natural and built environment and show the potential to continue to innovate, affect social change and explore new design approaches.”

Of LandLAB Landizer says:

“Established in 2013 by Design Director Henry Crothers, LandLAB is a New Zealand, design-led, studio-based practice creating sustainable, innovative and creative outcomes across a range of landscape, urbanism and placemaking projects in Tāmaki Makaurau-Auckland, across Aotearoa and beyond.

One of the firm’s flagship projects is the Avon River Precinct project. The project enhances access to the water and brings the spirit and ecology of the river (fluid) into a dialogue with the city (grid). The new promenade layers thicken the edge of the city to catalyse new opportunities for access and occupation.

LandLAB led the design for the Terraces river edge precinct, which transforms Oxford Terrace from a conventional street into a shared-use zone. Prioritising pedestrian access, occupation and a new tram circuit. Avon River Precinct has been honoured by several awards including the 2019 NZILA Category Winner in Urban Spaces.”
