Ikea's public rooftop park in Copenhagen
While New Zealand waits to hear if we really are getting an IKEA store here, a new IKEA with a public rooftop park is scheduled to open in 2023 in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro neighbourhood.
Dorte Mandrup have designed the 74,000 square-metre masterplan on Kalvebod Brygge to be topped with a green lounge, and this tree-lined roof will offer views over Vesterbro, the canal and the inner city.
The store can be accessed by a plaza bridging nearby train tracks, doubling as another public green space. The building’s wavy, white facade forms a curtain with folds that lift to create shaded seating areas, and ends in a pedestal at street level where people can relax in the sun between its ripples.
IKEA Copenhagen’s landscape design includes native trees, grasses and shrubs, as well as bug hotels for biodiversity.
The store has greenery on its facade, is cooled in part by water from the local canals, and features 1,450 square-metres of solar panels for electricity. Visitors are encouraged to use sustainable transport methods, assisting Copenhagen in its aim to be the first carbon neutral city in the world by 2025.
Dorte Mandrup hope their design will achieve a BREEAM Outstanding certification, the highest rating available for this sustainability assessment method.
IKEA Copenhagen is one of a series of smaller city-centre stores IKEA is creating in a bid to better serve its urban customers.
The Vesterbro neighbourhood is densely populated, with a shortage of green pockets and walkways, therefore the design will be a welcome addition of both retail and recreation for the local community.
