Abu Dhabi's first biodiversity park
Danish nature-design firm SLA Architects have created Abu Dhabi’s first biodiversity park, constructed on barren sand in the megacity’s downtown area.
Al Fay Park’s biodiverse planting, optimised microclimate and social activities have biological, environmental and social benefits. They offer a, “cool, comfortable, and unique round-the-clock place for all residents and visitors in Abu Dhabi to meet, play and live.”
Completed last year, the 27,500 square-metre development utilises solely native species. SLA’s biologists and planting experts researched the region’s unique nature and wildlife to inform the park’s design, allowing for authentic ecosystems and habitats.
More than 2,000 native trees and bushes have been chosen and planted to strengthen biodiversity, both of plants and wildlife, and maximise natural cooling. Included are national Ghaf trees replanted from desert nurseries.
Planting attracts bees, pollinators, birds and animals, contributing to a lush and lively atmosphere, and a winding forest track offers nature experiences under tree canopies and amongst flowers and grasses.
The park’s microclimate creates a forest-like atmosphere, with sloping entrances funnelling a cool southern breeze down into the park. Local grasses and bushes reduce sand infiltration, making the area usable even in sweltering summer months.
High tree density and a modern irrigation system using solely recirculated water mean Al Fay Park uses 40% less water than traditional parks.
Social activities include sports courts, playgrounds, climbing walls, fitness areas, mini golf, and informal outdoor seating areas.
SLA say Al Fay Park, “represents a paradigm shift in how to design and implement city nature in the dense megacities of the Middle East.” It forms the, “first urban park in UAE focusing on biodiversity, social activities and microclimate optimization. Designed aesthetically and climatically to be “the coolest place in town.””
