Bruno Marques takes over as IFLA President
The new International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Executive Committee has been announced and has taken over after this year’s World Council meeting late last month.
As we announced in July, the new IFLA President is Dr Bruno Marques of Victoria University of Wellington. He is currently the Associate Dean for the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation at the University and the immediate past Head of the Landscape Architecture Department.

LAA caught up with Bruno at Victoria University before the World Council and Congress in South Korea. He told us he is excited and honoured to the next IFLA president but says it is a big responsibility.
Bruno says he is looking forward to taking the federation forward and embracing the huge challenges facing the landscape architecture profession worldwide, including climate change and pressures of urbanisation.
Bruno says as a landscape architect who has studied and practiced in four countries, he hopes to use the expertise he had gained to bring landscape architects across the world, together.
Bruno completed his Landscape Architecture studies at Lisbon University (PT) and Berlin Technical University (DE), followed by his PhD studies at the University of Otago (NZ). He has practised in Germany, Estonia, the United Kingdom and Aotearoa-New Zealand and has an extensive portfolio of built projects.
During the past eight years at Victoria University Bruno has developed a comprehensive research agenda to embrace the formulation of frameworks on landscape rehabilitation, cultural landscapes, place-making and Indigenous community health and wellbeing.
He has contributed to the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) since 2008, most recently acting as the Standing Chair for Communications and External Relations (2014-2018).
In the video below, Bruno explains more about his goals as IFLA President.
